What is PCR Testing?
With nearly 40 years of development, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is a type of molecular biology technique used to amplify and detect genetic material, such as DNA and/or RNA. PCR testing is often used in medical diagnostics to identify the presence of viruses and/or bacteria in a patient’s biological sample. PCR tests are fast and highly accurate.
This method is superior to antigen-based tests and microbial culturing tests in many ways and has become a method of choice among healthcare professionals for the rapid detection and quantification (qPCR) of pathogens known to cause disease. In addition to pathogen identification, antibiotic-resistance genes are identified within hours rather than days allowing for early tailored antimicrobial therapy.
